Happy International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2019!

April 5th, 2019

by Janine Thornhill, Chairperson- Commonwealth Youth Sport for Development and Peace Network (CYSDP)

What activity do you know that has the power to bring together people of various socio-economic backgrounds, sexualities, abilities, religious beliefs and race? What activity do you know has the power to slow down time and allow for these people to co-exist without judgement and hate?My answer: SPORT!

Sport has the ability to provide a safe space to unite people. But most importantly, sport allows a platform for young people to dismantle systems that do not promote inclusion and equality for all people. It has the power to educate, innovate, create, advocate and demonstrate the importance of having dialogue on various issues or challenges that plague many individuals and communities, but also creates solutions to these challenges.I believe sport provides a platform for authenticity.

On behalf of the Commonwealth Youth Sport for Development and Peace Network (CYSDP), we encourage policy makers to incorporate sport into their national development framework.

Happy International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2019!
