“Leave all the mistakes behind you, and learn”

November 28th, 2016

trevon-pollardMistakes, writes Trevon Pollard, 23, a Correspondent from Guyana now living in Montserrat, should be a catalyst for change and success. He urges learning from the hurdles of the past in order to see the possibilities of the future.

On one of the longest afternoon walks I’ve ever ventured on, I was blessed with the opportunity to self-search. Looking at my life, I reminisced on some of the major hurdles I overcame and the direction from whence I came, remembering this old saying, “never allow your past to determine your future”.

Some of us continue to live our lives holding on to the past, therefore limiting ourselves and forcing a premature destiny. Wherever you are at this time reading this article, let me encourage you to let go of your past and learn from it.

Let those who will forever judge you by your mistakes see the change in you. If you keep looking back, you will never have a clear view of where you’re going. Rather, you will only handicap yourself in life’s race.

We all make mistakes, some of great magnitude and some lesser, but we are all humans and none of us is perfect. Should we allow our mistakes to limit our future achievements? No!  What we should do, however, is use those mistakes as a catalyst for change and success rather than make decisions influenced by our past hurdles.

Author of “The Purpose Driven Life” and many other books, Rick Warren, once said: “We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.”

This quotation says it all: Stop being prisoners of your past life. Your actions in your past brought you to your current state but do not allow them to take you any further. Start working at your dreams and goals with a clear and focused mind, creating the destiny you want for yourself.

Living in the past can sometimes negate your ability to access opportunities and render you stagnant.  It’s time to get out of the  past and look towards  the  future. The  desire is not enough, you must have the will to leave your past  behind.

There may be habits and different reasons which caused you to hold on to the past. Make that step by faith and leave it all behind. Embrace the future and the endless possibilities it has to offer.

I never said it would be easy. Temptations  will come, but the power to overcome is within you. People will criticise you and mention your past, but  remember that it’s not where you’ve been, it’s where you’re going.

About me: My premier goal is to become a politician, to bring about change in the Caribbean and to create model legislation that Commonwealth and other countries can adopt.

I have been working in the media industry; and am currently doing online studies in public relations, as they play an integral part of the success of any Government.  After graduating, my hope is to gain some political experience working along with a political strategist.
