“Step by step, he plans to succeed”

Musa TemidayoFocus and hard work are the keys to success for a young entrepreneur interviewed by Musa Temidayo, 25, a Commonwealth Correspondent from Nigeria.

Some people think it requires a lorry load of cash to start a successful and enduring business, but Dami Subair, CEO of DamoSmart, knows that with a positive great mind set and a very huge amount of resourcefulness, you are good to go.

Dami Subair “DamoSmart” (as fondly called) started from his undergraduate days as a student in the Department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University. As an undergraduate, he was about fashion and event management. He has now started his shoe making business and a shoe line that is highly commendable and enormously applauded amongst fashion enthusiast and shoe lovers.

At his office, with no lights on, DamoSmart is very determined and not giving chances to anything that can weigh him down in this business.

“Running a start up business of this nature is not stress free in this country,” he said.

“The need to make new products at the market entry level cheaper than other brands that have been in existence before I was even born is something that makes being an entrepreneur worrisome.”

From the outset, Dami Subair identified where his passion and interests lay, and he decided to pursue it.

“One thing that resonate in the minds of people when they hear the name “DamoSmart” is fashion and entertainment. And I am working tirelessly to make that known beyond my present network. I have organised many campus shows and  departmental trips within and outside of the country and with a prominent crew member of a major campus fashion show. These opportunities gave me a platform to learn more, take risks and be independent,” he said.

Musa article pic“At a very tender age, I have learnt to take the bull by the horn. I grew up in a neighbourhood where there’s a lot of social vices which can influence the upbringing of a child. If not for education, I wouldn’t know what will be of me.”

When asked how he came up with the idea, he said “well, well, Ermmm…. It actually started during the second semester of my final year on campus. I was trying to figure out what I will be doing after completion of my degree program. I started making enquiries on different things that came into my mind but then, I did not decide on exactly what to do because of the mountain of works with final year. After two months after my final exams, I discussed with my sister who would later give me a soft loan and a close friend and they both gave their support, then I knew shoe making is what ranks it all. And that is how DamoSmart started.”

“The competition with other shoe brands in the industry is a very healthy one, with the knowledge that I have big names (local and international) to compete with, this spurs me to be more hardworking, be more creative with my designs and to make consumers happy. DamoSmart wears are classically crafted to meet with the lifestyle of different people,” he said.

“The challenge is now how to balance the need to give my consumers quality and affordable product with the rise in price of supplies.”

Dami Subair admits that the journey in making the brand “DamoSmart” a household name would not be easy, but he strongly believe that bit by bit, step by step he is definitely going to get there.

“You can order DamoSmart from leading online retail stores like Jumia, Konga and TracList,” he noted.

Within the first two months that he started, his shoes and designs have caught the attention of some celebrities, a serving Senator and many fashion enthusiasts.

Dami Subair’s story exemplifies the power of focus and a determination to stand out in one’s chosen field. He represents a new breed of young, active, hardworking and entrepreneurial youth.
