"Empowering women to ensure equality"

January 14th, 2014

Achuth MenonWomen are guaranteed equality under the law and hold powerful roles, writes Achuth Menon, 20, a Commonwealth Correspondent from India, but many women around the world still face violence and exclusion.

Although the 21st century has witnessed drastic changes in all dimensions, the orthodox mindset of the masses still continues to haunt the population of women in a larger scale.

As we look back, the pre-independence period also witnessed the same dilemma for women. They were persecuted vigorously and they tended to be submissive to the opposite sex.

This oppression was non-transient, as the road after independence had the same tale reiterated. We live in a country were we had great women of power like Indira Gandhi, who ruled the country for two successive terms as Prime Minister. At present we have Arundati Bhattacharya at the helm of the State Bank of India. Yet as is the case in various other banking and industrial institutions, the role for these leaders doesn’t end with the job. Each woman leader is also a loving mother for her children, beloved wife and well behaved in-law.They have shown their excellence in every field which needs to be looked upon while suming their contributions.

If women have the verve and capability to be multi-behavioural in their attitude, the question to be put forward is why do they face so much betrayal and suppression? Why are they still being ousted to the periphery of society? The answer for this question remains elusive and hypothetical. For an answer, we need a generation with equal visions.

Now we live in a society which is dynamic and advanced. It has diverse multitudes striving for excellence, but lacking in the versatility needed for modern life. We must ecstatically admit changes and should adapt rather resist it. We must move with the changing times were in both men and women have pivotal role to cast.

It’s time we move forward and bury the old ethics of men’s tyranny over women. In this era of computerisation women should at last gain opportunity to take on the large role they so obviously can perform.

Ostensibly the contribution from both sides of the gender divide tend to be the same, but the benefit flowing to women from the so-called better half doesn’t have a happy conclusion. Even in these modern days women are sexually harassed. Brutal felonies as such incidents deter them from coming out of the murky past.

The French ambassador Jerome Bonafond on a visit to India told the Indian Express that more than a hundred crimes against women are registered daily in France. This phenomenon is equally pervasive and evident in different parts of the world. This sad situation should be answered with the help of an efficient law system and concerted efforts to change the malicious mind set of people who would devalue women.

As time passes we should develop a method of thinking with equality to meet the fiasco of the gender gap, and make sure our women are immune from this sporadic brutality.
